This religious complex provides the art history course that you always dreamed about!The SANTA MARIA NOVELLA CHURCH COMPLEX is the art history course that you dreamed about and a tour of this complex will engage equally the first timers & the long time Renaissance student!
In the church and the monastery we discover the treasure trove of works by great master artists from the Medieval period through to the High Renaissance; Giotto, Masaccio, Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi – to name a some of the greats.Â
We visit the church, cloister & the famous pharmacy.Â
Afterwards, we discover the SURROUNDING NEIGHBOURHOOD and hunt out the architectural masterpiece Renaissance palatial homes of the wealthy merchant patrons who commissioned the art inside this church. This tour puts the pieces of the Renaissance puzzle together tying together artistic patronage, merchant money, spiritual devotion and politics through the discover of the architecture, paintings, frescoes and protagonists.
This tour provides a full, complete picture to the factors involved in art patronage and helps us understand how the Renaissance life functioned with the entwined factors of church, economics and family life.Â
EXTEND THE TOUR 1 HOUR TO INCLUDE THE BRANCACCI CHAPEL:
After visiting the neighbourhood & the Santa Maria Novella complex, we head over the other side of the river and we visit the famous BRANCACCI CHAPEL inside the Santa Maria del Carmine church.Â
Frescoed in the 1420s commissioned by the wealthy silk merchant Felice Brancacci, this chapel  has been considered one of the most important sites for Renaissance art in Italy since its very creation. It was considered an artistic rite of passage already only decades after being frescoed. Â

Headsets
Headsets are required for parties of 4 or more people so that everyone can hear the guide clearly.
Headset Rental Cost
♦ Headset Rental Half Day (up to 4 hours)  for 4-12 people €30 (+ €2.50pp for parties greater than 12 people)
♦ Headset Rental Full Day (greater than 4 hours) for 4-12 people €50 (+ €5pp for parties greater than 12 people)
Payment
Prepayment is required for guided tour costs. This is done as a security measure so that large sums of cash are not carried or exchanged on the day of the tour. We use a secure payment system provided by SumUP, you do not need to have a SumUP account to use it, you can sign in as a guest and use a credit card. SumUP charges a 2.5% handling/service fee which will be added to your invoice.
Dress Code
Shoulders need to be covered and clothing to the knee (shorts or skirt) when entering churches.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations or date changes made less than 1 week prior to the tour start time require full payment. Cancellations or date changes made within 2 weeks of your tour date will require half payment. Tours proceed in inclement weather. Museum reservation fees and pre-purchased tickets are non-refundable. SumUP handling/service fees are non-refundable.
