Cathedral Complex (3 or 4 hrs)
This tour is dedicated to discovering the cathedral square and the three monuments that make up the square: the cathedral, the baptistery & the bell tower.Â
The Florentine cathedral was the largest in the Christian world for 300 years before handing his title to St Peter’s when it was finished in the 1600s. Being the most important religious complex in the city all the great artists of Florence trained and worked at some point in the piazza. We can study the career span of Donatello, the first Renaissance sculpture, though his works commissioned for all three structures.Â
The pope chose the bishop of the city but the citizens of Florence paid for the entire complex and so it is where they poured their money and their excellence for the world to see.Â
Studying the art of this complex leads to a fascinating unfolding of the Medieval and Renaissance way of viewing the world and the people who lived in it. It shows how when humankind is truly faced with obstacles, they rise to the challenge. This cathedral complex of Florence is the display of how strong the human spirit can be.Â
