Artemisia Gentileschi ..’the Soul of a Caesar’

Against All Odds, Artemisia achieved Europe-Wide Fame.

Artemisia wrote in 1621 in response to a patron who doubted the artistic abilities of women You will find the Spirit of Caesar in the Soul of a Woman

Aretemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653) was born and trained in Rome but came to Florence when barely 20 years old where she stayed for about six years. Her father had negotiated marriage to a man in Florence, a stranger to Artemisia, as she had to leave Rome in a hurry. She arrived in this new country, the Duchy of Tuscany, with only her artistic training. She had no money, no contacts, no family nor friends and no support.  She would leave Florence a few years later in her mid-20s as an established artist with many commissions under her belt, no less than four paintings commissioned from the Medici Grand Duke & Duchess of Tuscany as well as being the first female member of the Academy of Disegno (Fine Arts). She was a force of nature. She was a talented artist who fought against all odds to be independent & successful. She was ambitious and tenacious and had a fascinating career.

We visit the places in Florence where her works are displayed and thread together one of the most fascinating and intriguing artist stories of the seventeenth century. We will put her life and work in hisotrical contact whilst also seeing some of the masterpiece work from the same period, the 1600d Baroque.

Whilst telling her story we recreate the atmosphere of the 1600s Baroque in Florence. We visit the house of one of her most ardent Florentine supporters, none other than the great nephew of the great Michelangelo, the so-called Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger in his house the CASA BUONARROTI , we then visit the UFFIZI GALLERY and then cross the river to the PITTI PALACE.
